    DIY: How I made my own Lighted Retail Shelf

    So when you're opening a salon there has to be space for RETAIL. A place to display all those delicious smelling products that you use on your clients. Those things that are better for their hair than those drugstore products they've been using. 

    When I put my deposit down I knew exactly what shelf I would be using for my retail shelf. It was an Ikea shelf from my old apartment. Of course....it was RED. Doesn't exactly jive with the pink,black & white I was going for. 

    Sooooo, I painted that bad boy black...not just black...black chalkboard. 

    I used this Rust-oleum chalk board paint as a base (bc it scratches off easily) then covered that paint with actual paint on chalkboard paint I got from Target. (I totally forgot to photograph that paint, but its the only one Target sells)

    This was the end result. 

    My original idea was to write the retail names & prices on the ledge of each shelf in chalkboard marker. Then my dad had a better idea, we had some signs with LED lights in them that we were pulling apart to put underneath each shelf to light up the products. Those signs just happened to fit perfectly with the legenth of the shelf. I now had an entire lighted retail shelf with lighted signs. I measured the signs, picked a font & printed the names of each of my retail products. 

    I hid all the wires by taping them to the top of the shelf with black duct tape, and running them into a wire hider along the back of the shelf. Those can be found at Lowes & Home Depot for about $13-$21 depending on legenth. 

    Now the chalkboard paint seems like almost a waste since I decided to go with lighted signs. BUT, I can still write on the side of the shelf to welcome all new clients to my salon. A little something to make them feel special!

  • MYSTIQUE DAY SPA & CRYSTAL CASEY: THE BREAKUP

    Ok, so I feel like this is the beginning of a Taylor Swift song. Like at any moment I'm gonna break out into some guitar strumming, ballad about my broken heart & how I have the best revenge by being happy......"we are never, ever, ever, getting back toetherrrrrrr....."

    But, in all reality...that's not the case at all. 

    But, let me first start by saying...I am no longer an employee at Mystique Salon & Day Spa. I am now strictly working for myself. High Voltage Hair by Crystal Casey! Its exciting & scary all at the same time.

    I worked at Mystique Salon & Day Spa 5 years ago (2 years out of hair school) I thought I knew it alllll. I quickly learned I did not. HAHA! Amy (the owner) took a huge chance on me when she hired me. My ego & know it all attitude quickly sent me on my way (by choice). Amanda (her sister & Master Stylist) was my mentor for over a year while I worked there & still remains to this day to be one of my biggest cheerleaders, supporters & mentor. (& isnt she so pretty???!?!)

    Last December, Amanda spoke to Amy on my behalf about bringing me back into the salon. I was ready to be back in a salon environment, be a team player, have continuing education with the backing of all the Mystique girls, work on events & brainstorm fabulous ideas together as a TEAM! & we did just that, we ROCKED some movie nights (& had a great time doing it) we executed a phonemail bridal shoot, & shared & enjoyed some great Paul Mitchell education. 

    Amy was very understanding about my current wedding business & allowed me to continue booking weddings. We agreed that my schedule would be very few days to begin with as I tried to transition my clients from a home based business to the structure of a salon & build from any walk-ins that would come my way. The wedding season that would happen for me in 2014 completely blindsided both of us. 

    I think I spent a total of 5 Saturdays in the salon from Jan-Sept. & lets face it, Saturday is a busy day in the salon. I also had some unforeseen health issues this year that kept me out on the 1-2 days that I was scheduled to be there outside of the weekend. 

    Ultimately, Amy felt it was best for her business & mine to terminate my contract. 

    Its not that I was a bad employee/stylist or that she was a heartless boss, because that most certainly is not that case at all. Honestly, she just couldn't keep me booked. I had many NO CALL/NO SHOWS & cancellations while I was there, leaving my days empty. But, for the clients that I did have in my chair, that I did build that bond with, that I did get that chance to make them feel beautiful & special....I will miss them but, I know they are in good hands with the girls there! 

    She also stated that she recognized all the hard work I had put into building my business & that I was better suited to be a business owner, than an employee. She has since helped me with any problems I have faced or questions I have had on the business side of things. Amy is a business guru & a great mentor. 

    I still have a wonderful relationship with all the girls there, specifically Amy. She gave me a very personal letter stating how sad she was that she had to make this decision, we even shared a very heartfelt moment & some tears were shed by both of us. 

    In my time at Mystique I helped launch, what I know to be, a wonderful Bridal division. We shot an AMAZING bridal shoot & I got to know & love the girls there all over again. I built personal & professional relationships that I hope will continue to grow. 

    Amy & I still work together as stylist & makeup artist on styled shoots & weddings together & will continue to do so as our businesses grow. 

    (Thats supposed to say August 25th 2014!)

    I will miss seeing all these girls every week!

  • Do it yourself VS. Professional: Hair & Makeup.

    DIY weddings can certainly be a lot of fun. Making decor with your mom, being proud of all the hard work that you have put into your big day. Not to mention the amount of money you saved. The glamours, rustic feel of an outdoor barn twinkling with lights like glitter in the night sky. Well i cant picture anything more perfect. 

    Most DIY brides budget their money for 3 things.

    1-A good photographer. After all pictures do last a lifetime.

    2-The venue. Location, Location, LOCATION!

    3-Dress. Disney princess. Enough Said. 

    But what about hair and makeup?

    A lot of DIY brides know someone who is "good at doing hair" or has a cousion who is really "good with makeup". That might be ok for the day to day but, do you really wanna chance that on your WEDDING DAY? You have spent thousands of dollars on a wonderful, professional photographer. Someone who is going ot make sure the lighting is always perfect, the angle is always the best & you really do look like a Disney princess in each photo. But theres only so much that can be done in photoshop.

    Those bags under your eyes? Because lets face it, you enjoyed your rehersal dinner a little too much. 

    They arernt fixable.

    Your off shade foundation? Nope. Sorry.

    Flat hair? nuh uh. Sorry. 

    Half fallen out curls pinned up with a chopstick? Forget about it. 

    Too much bronzer 3 shades too dark? Sorry boo boo.

    Running lipstick? Not Happening. 

    An updo that has half fallen out and now looks more windblown than anything?

    Nope.

    Professional hairstylist are trained in all things hair. We know the science of the hair, we know how to mold it like putty to make it do what we need it to do, without over loading on product and making you look like a grease ball. Because lets face it, some updos....there are no coming back from.

    Professional hairstylist know the right degree of heat to use for your hair type so no damage is done. We use only the top of the line tools and products to make sure your do' last through the cupid shuffle and fighting 9 girls for a bouquet. Hair stylist are mathmaticians, artist & chemist. We have an eye for updos. We know exactly where every single bobby pin should go so its not seen. We know exactly where to place each and every curl to build the perfect, not so promy, bridal updo. We do what we do, because we love what we do. But, most of all because at the end of the day....we love making our brides and clients happy. Seeing you smile is worth it to us. 

    So before you decide to DIY with hair and makeup. Contact your local stylist/artist. Ask questions even go in for a trial! I promise you wont regret it!

    Searching for a stylist on your wedding day can be stressful.

    A lot of women have a regular hairstylist that they visit to take care all of their cut & color needs. But when it comes to your wedding day, can they do what you want? Will they be available to leave the salon to come to your location to do your hair? How much experience do they have with making a timeline for a wedding party of 7+ girls? Can they do braids? How fast can they do an updo? Are they familiar with what styles that will look good from all angles and on camera?

    These are all major questions to be considered. While (in my opinion) hairstylist should be well rounded in ALL THINGS HAIR....most are not. Now a days it seems every hairstylist has ONE thing that they specialize in. Which can make it frustrating for you, the client, to have to find another stylist who specializes in what you're looking for.

    What do I specialize in?

    Blondes

    Red Heads

    Color Correction

    Hilights

    Hair cuts

    Extensions

    Updo's

    etc..

    Not to brag on myself but, excuse me while I tell you how awesome I am...

    I am, by all means, a hairstylist who is well rounded and highly educated in everything hair. I can take a brunette to platinum blonde, I can fix a wretched ombre, I can do a CORRECT OMBRE. Blonde to dimensional brunette? No problem. My red heads? ON POINT. Need an angled bob...I got this. I spend a lot of time educating myself & perfecting my skills. But, I am also a wedding hair artist. This means I specialize in wedding hair AND the day of preparation.

    Finding a wedding hair artist can be a bit frustrating. There are a lot of hairstylist out there that say they can do what you want but, when it comes down to it, its not at all what you were looking for. 

    So here are the top questions to ask a hairstylist you are looking at booking for your wedding day!

    1-Will you be available to come to my location on my wedding day? Will there be an extra charge for this?

    2-What is the average time you can do updo in? (If you want to use this person for your entire wedding party and its more than 5 girls make sure their time is under 50 mins or they bring an assistant)

    3-How long have you been doing weddings?

    4-Where can I go to see reviews from other brides?

    5-Do you offer bridal trials? When can I set mine up?

    6-Bring a picture and ask if they can do what you are showing them.

    7-Can you do different types of braids?

    8-Look around their website or Facebook page for recommendations(tags, photos etc) from other wedding professionals. If you don't see any, ask. 

    9-Will there be a travel fee for my location?

    10-What forms of payment do you accept?

    11-What is the booking policy? Minimum policy?

    Questions your hairstylist should be asking YOU:

    1-What is the location and time of your ceremony?

    2-How many people will be receiving hair services? How many of them are in the bridal party?

    3-Where is the prep location? What time will you be arriving there?

    4-Who is your photographer/ makeup artist? (I ask this because if I am familiar with these vendors I usually know how they work & can contact them to set up timelines. Especially the makeup artist, we usually work hand in hand)

    5-When would you like to come in for your bridal trial?

    6-Will you have any hair pieces/veil?

    7-Did you have a specific look in mind for your bridesmaids or are they choosing their own styles? (Generally I don't want anyones hair to resemble the bride)

    8-What time do you need to leave your prep location?

    9-When will your photographer/makeup artist be arriving?

    10-Will you be doing first look/wedding party photos before or after the ceremony?

    Most brides find out late in the game that they have to offer all of this info to their hired day of hairstylist, which causes an entire timeline change. Thus, showing the difference between a wedding hair artist & an in salon hairstylist. While there are some wedding hair artist who work in salons, they are very few and far between.
